Kev McCurdy, Fight Director / Choreographer
Hi! This is Kev McCurdy writing. I am working with the cast of Robin Hoods Hjärta at Uppsala city theatre to support them in all the fight and combat scenes that are part of this big adventure. I hope you will all come and see the performance this winter!
Here are some slides from around the world where I have worked with Robin Hoods Hjärta. As you may know, the production had a world premiere in England in 2011 and have travelled since then to Norway, the US and Canada. Following our Swedish premiere, the production with return for more performance in the US, including on Broadway! As a fight director and choreographer, I get to work with all of the fight scenes. The idea is to make them look “for real”.
In every production that I work, I make a short film, playing with the fighting elements… Look at these two where I ran into Robin Hood and Marion at Uppsala City Theatre!
To get to this point where I travel around the world to help actors fight on stage or on TV or film, I have had quite an extensive training. I started the same way as a lot of other actors in this business: performing in school plays. My love of movement was kickstarted by breakdancing and body popping. Mom taught me the basics of tap, I learnt some of the foundations of ballet and contemporary dance, so movement and acting was a big part of my life when I was growing up.
After attending Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 1988, I continued with acting and movement training, (which involved mime, contemporary jazz, “Yang style” Tai chi chuan, tap, ballet), but as soon as I started with stage combat training, I fell in love with it. From there I become an assistant to a Fight Master, and then I got my Equity card. Mixing the movement styles I’d acquired with the acting, I developed my own style and started teaching at the Bridge Theatre Training Co and at The Oxford School of Drama. During that time, I went onto Equitys’ Fight Directors course and qualified in 1996. The rest, as they say, is history.
Now, come to the theatre to see Robin Hoods hjärta!
